Sustainability

Our Bag Is Our Bond

We believe in sustainable humanity

A world where people and the environment are viewed as two halves of an essential whole, not resources to be taken advantage of. A world where organizations recognize they wouldn’t exist without both a healthy planet and workforce. But how does Sustainable Humanity impact you, the customer?

For one, empowered people make better products. By treating workers with dignity, harnessing their love of craft, and enabling them to step into their best selves, our customers reap the benefits of high-quality and soulful work. Further, by trusting nature’s ancient materials and ensuring their renewability, our bags last longer and exist in harmony with the world.

When you carry Daveed, you’ll feel an infusion of spirit that will elevate you to a state of heartfelt joy. Bank on your Daveed being so much more than a bag. Our Bag is Our Bond.

About B Corporation

The world’s most challenging problems require innovative solutions that cannot come from governments and nonprofits alone. Certified B Corporations adhere to stringent environmental and social standards based on a third-party audit of the supply chain, workforce, quality control, and other factors.

Daveed is the first luxury leather bag brand in the world to achieve Certified B Corporation status. We also far exceed the industry average score of 51. With an 86, we are honouring our core ethics of respect, integrity, and soulfulness.

Timeless quality and a stunning aesthetic are just the beginning. We are using our business as a force for good in the world. But we have more work to do! See below for some of our key environmental priorities for 2020 and beyond.

Core Initiatives

Named as a World Changing Idea by Fast Company, Nixburg Bullskin® is a game-changer in luxury leather goods. Our cutting-edge process uses 80% less water and 75% less energy than other leathers. All hides are sourced from registered farms close to our tannery, and are exclusively a by-product of the meat industry. Between our bags and by-products like gelatin and fertilizer, 99% of the hide is used. The result: unbelievable sustainability paired with unmatched durability and beauty.

Nixburg Bullskin® is produced in a rural German town by the legendary Heinen Leather tannery. Founded in 1891 with a handful of workers, Heinen has grown into one of the world’s most innovative and progressive tanneries. As they say: “Ein Unternehmen mit Geschichte und Zukunft” — they are a “company with a history and a future.” Honouring heritage while moving boldly forward is a quality that resonates with us.

Daveed’s deeply held ethos of environmental stewardship is one that we are glad to share with progressive-minded companies all over the globe. We are a member of 1% for the Planet, an alliance that directs hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental nonprofits. By contributing at least 1% of our annual sales, we are making a difference, together.

Water is a core ingredient in leather, and historically, water-based nonprofits were our focus. We are also deeply concerned about deforestation, and the focus of our donations in 2019 is on reforestation. Trees are the biggest carbon stores and have the potential and power to help us avert our current climate crisis. Through our tannery, we reforest in Uganda’s Kikonda forest reserve. Between low-energy production and carbon offsets, the production of our Nixburg Bullskin® is carbon neutral – a first in luxury leather bags.

Every aspect of our bags is consciously considered, and this includes how we package and ship them. We eschew glossy, highly branded packaging which is often environmentally harmful. All of our boxes and packaging tape are recyclable. Further, this understated approach to packaging helps keep your bag safe from theft.

When you open your package, you’ll find a gorgeous GOTS-certified organic cotton drawstring cover. Hand-made in Italy, your cover is perfect for storing your bag and it’s attractive and durable enough to use as a handy travel accessory. We are committed to luxury packaging without the toxicity.

Charting the Path to Zero Impact Luxury

Our approach to luxury leather bags is without precedent and we take pride in our industry leadership. But there’s work to do. Our goal is zero impact luxury. It’s just not enough for companies to stop when they reach an “acceptable” level of sustainability. We believe in continuous improvement on how we source, design, and manufacture. Here are our core priorities:

Our Future Environmental Plans

Our products are built with premium cuts of leather, strong stitching, long-lasting zips, and a 3-year warranty. We’ve taken your feedback into account when developing our classic designs to ensure they meet modern functionality demands. We never compromise our approach to quality which results in extremely low defect rates. In short, we’re creating bags that will be with you for the long run.

As a relatively young company, we haven’t yet completed a full lifecycle assessment of our products so that the most accurate measurement of environmental impact can occur. Because we build personal relationships with many of our customers, it’s our hope that we’ll be able to track bags through their lifecycle.

We use only by-product hides from the local meat industry to produce Nixburg Bullskin®, and never source hides from cut-down rainforests. However, we are still exploring if (and how) we should account for a portion of a bull’s ranching and associated carbon emissions in our calculation of overall impact. We will continue to consider this and are committed to transparency.

We’re proud to work with globally-renowned hardware partners. Riri in particular has a strong approach to sustainability. However, the hardware industry as a whole has work to do to limit its impact and chemical use. At this stage, quality comes first and the alternatives just don’t measure up. We won’t stop until we strike the optimal balance of quality and sustainability.

This is one of our ultimate goals. We strive to create a system where used bags can be recycled back into their component parts and turned into new long-lasting goods. We have awhile to go to get there, but won’t ever stop improving.
